이번전시 ‘Journey Home’ (여정)은 많은 이민자들이 마주하는 감정적, 정신적인 경험이나 느낌을 ‘여정’ 이라는 은유적인 표현을 통해 비추어 보았습니다.
‘Home’(집)에 대한 컨셉은 각자에게 다르겠지만 저에게는 가족, 한국의 독특한 정신과 문화로서 여기서의 나의 ‘여정’은 복잡다양하고 계층화된 수준에서 나의 개인적인 경험이나 메모리 그리고 감정과 느낌을 회화, 드로잉, 설치를 통해 집으로의 여정과 연결을 만들수있는 고리 역활을하며 그 과정에서 수많은 감정적 순간, 정신적인 수행의식및 과거와의 연결을 재현할수 있으며 창조하는 동안에는 가장 나와 가까와지는 시간이며 명상의 시간이며 또한 치유와 정화의 과정입니다.
저의 작품은 항상 글자(한글)로 표현하고 그것은 일기를 쓰는 습관으로부터 영향을 받았고 특히 한국에서 호주로 이민을 온후 나의 감정이나 느낌을 한글로 일기에 표현하면서 많은 위로와 위안을 받아 그것을 토대로 작품을 통해 재창조함으로서 나의 가족과 내가 남기고온 한국문화와 연결시켜주는 의사소통 그이상의 아주 중요한 의미를 부여합니다.
I was born in Korea and now live in Australia. This exhibition ‘Journey Home’ reflects upon the emotional, spiritual and metaphorical journey that confronts the many people who migrate to another country. The memories and experiences that are so vividly recalled are often all that remains of their connection with their country of birth.
The concept of ‘Home” is different for everyone, but for me it is my family, culture and the unique spirituality of Korea. The journey I undertake involves creating connections on many complex and layered levels, it is through my painting and installations that I can journey home, reliving many emotional moments, spiritual rituals and often realities that have been blurred by time. My work allows me to experience the memories of the past whilst appreciating my life in a new country and a new culture.
Sourced from my diaries and journals, remembered occasions, memories and experiences are revisited, nurtured and re-invented through my work process and art practice. I use a personal script or text, which is derived from calligraphy, to relate stories and recreate moments in time which have significance in connecting me to my family and the culture I left behind.
